Rice paper is the brush painter's canvas. Mastering the way ink behaves on the different rice papers is the one of the essential skills of the brush painter. There are basically two kinds of rice paper -- raw paper and sized paper.

Below is a chart detailing the different characteristic of each type of paper.

We have six categories of paper to choose from:

Raw
Shuen is the most popular paper in China among brush painters and calligraphers. It is the most sensitive of the rice papers, cheerfully displaying dynamic strokes and complex shade variations with translucent fluidity and original spontaneity.

Sized
Sized Shuen paper is smooth, long fibered rice paper, sized with multiple coats of alum solution. The long fibers and sizing make this paper durable and highly water-resistant i.e. less absorbent. Sized paper is ideal for landscapes and fine line technique as it can take multiple washes with ease.

Practice
As many artists have found through experience, rice paper is the best material to practice on. OAS has several inexpensive and easy to use machine-made rice papers that are perfect for practice.
